The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has placed message boards along US 62 in Ohio County to alert motorists that smoke may blow across the highway from time to time.
An old underground coal mine near US 62 between the 4 and 5 mile marker in the Broadway Curve area between Rockport and McHenry is on fire and creates smoke that, depending on wind direction and weather conditions, occasionally blows across the highway. This is along US 62 in Ohio County between Midway Road and Middle Road.
The message boards were placed at the request of Ohio County Emergency Management and law enforcement.
As efforts move forward to extinguish or otherwise deal with the coal mine fire, lane restrictions may be required in this area to facilitate the work. Motorists traveling this section of US 62 in Ohio County should be alert and use appropriate caution.
