The Hopkins county school board will have to spend an extra $5 million dollars to account for the settling of the new career and technical school.  In their regular meeting last night at the board office, the board approved payments to contractors to insert pylons beneath the foundation that will extend to the bedrock to support the ailing building.
 
Architectural consultant Larry Schwering informed the board that these 6 inch diameter steel tube pylons will be inserted to reinforce the footers and the foundation.  According to Assistant Superintendent of Facilities Steve Gilliam, construction will begin immediately and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete.  The total project completion date is spring of 2013 with classes scheduled to begin in the fall.  This pushes the total project completion cost to over $16 million.
 
School officials met with the Kentucky Department of Education prior to the meeting and informed the KDE of the plan, which was approved by the state.
 
In other business the board approved a 1% pay raise for certified employees, workers compensation rates which decreased this fiscal year, and approved a carry over of unused Sight based decision making funds that allows funding for textbooks and computers at the individual schools. 
 
The next meeting of the school board will be Monday, July 16^th, at 5:30 p.m. at the board office.
