Who is patty b? I don’t really know, some guy who sits behind a microphone all day and yaps on and on about history and economics and other non-essential blather I guess. Actually patty b is a nickname given to me by a good friend and listener named Willie Brown. Not really one to turn down a nickname just because it’s a girly name, I pretty well grabbed onto it because….well….I AM Irish and Patty is a fine Irish name. So there.
I’ve been doin’ this radio gig now for 4 ½ years and I still feel like it’s the first day sometimes. I had worked in radio once before in 2000 and 2001 for our sister station 730 AM WFMW and I pretty much sucked at that. Oh yeah, when I was in high school I was the janitor at this very station. It was kind of a family affair. But I sucked at janitoring back then so I just went to college and then joined the Navy when the dean asked me to not come back to college until I could actually go to class.
The Navy was good to me. I was a medic, otherwise known as a Hospital Corpsman….the p and s are silent by the way. Got out of the Navy, did some hitchhikin’, came back home, went to school for Physical Therapy, worked with all kinds of great people; pediatrics, outpatient, sports injuries, geriatrics, developmental disabilities. It was fun but the corporate structure of health care really sucks. The money was good and my work was rewarding, my co-workers were great…usually women….which was even greater, but I wanted to be in radio.
So I bugged the hell out of the owner and….well….here I sit writing this goofy bio.
I have a daughter who is 13 and is a budding guitar player. She is also quite possibly the coolest kid in the whole world.
I also play music when I’m not working or raising my daughter. I play solo acoustic gigs on occasion. I play in PB & J which is myself and Johnny Keyz. He plays bass and keyboard and sings. Clint Combs plays drums for us. I know there are a lot of good drummers out there, but Clint is money every time. He can play any style in any timing. I’m lucky to have those guys in my corner. We pretty much stick to rock and roll and singer/songwriter stuff, as well as originals. I also play in a bluegrass/newgrass band called Plowin’ Todd Cowan and the Sodbusters. We play bluegrass and modern music using traditional instruments. We’ve been together for about five years or so after starting out playin’ for a girl scouts fundraiser. My main instrument in the Sodbusters is the mandolin. I don’t really know how to play it but somebody had to pick it up so….i was elected. We have a lot of fun and we’ve played some great gigs….Kentucky Bike Fest in Sturgis, the Pumpkin Fest in the ‘boro, the floor of the Kentucky State House of Representatives. We are on youtube, just punch in the name in the search box and check out our rendition of Billy Joel’s “You May Be Right”. You can become a fan of both PB & J and the Sodbusters on facebook.
I hope you dig the show, the station, and the website. There are so many good bands right here in the tri-state, so much great music being made here in our backyard. I encourage you to mosey down to the pub tonight and catch your local band or singer or acoustic players, drop a couple bucks in the tip jar, have a brew and then tell all your friends how cool that local band was.
Thanks again and hope to talk with you soon,
Love,
pat
