KENTUCKY WESLEYAN GOING TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT FOR THE 35TH TIME
Panthers seek record ninth NCAA Championship

 

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 8, 2008) -- Eight-time NCAA Champion Kentucky Wesleyan (19-8) will make their 35th record NCAA breaking appearance in the Division II men's tournament when the No. 7 seed Panthers travel to Findlay, Ohio to play in the Midwest Regional on Saturday, March 15 (quarterfinals), Sunday, March 16 (semifinals), and Tuesday, March 18 (championship).

        The Panthers will play No. 2 seed and No. 18 ranked Bellarmine (24-6) on Saturday at 1:30 CT. KWC spilt the two-game series with fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member the Knights this season.  The Panthers lost at then No. 5 Bellarmine 69-48 on Jan. 5, and KWC came back to win 75-67 at the Sportscenter against the No. 18 Knights.                        

        The eight-team tournament will be hosted by No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked Findlay University in their 2,200-seat Croy Gymnasium. The winners of the eight regions from around the nation will meet in the "Elite Eight" in Springfield, Mass., on March 25-28.

        Ticket information will be available on Monday.

        The Panthers won the NCAA Championship in 1966, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1987, 1990, 1999 and 2001, and have won a record 91 of 117 games played in NCAA postseason.

KENTUCKY WESLEYAN WOMEN'S SOCCER RECEIVES GLVC SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

First-time recognition for a Panther sport team

 

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 15, 2008) — The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's soccer team, led by head coach Larry Simpson, received the Great Lakes Valley Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Award for best displaying "Good Sportsmanship" during the 2008 season. This marks the first KWC team in any sport to receive this recognition. 

        Rockhurst University tied the Panthers in voting.

        The SAAC Sportsmanship Award is determined by votes of the 13 GLVC member institutions’ campus SAACs. The committees select their top three choices in each sport and base their view of sportsmanship. The GLVC sponsors the award in each of the league’s 17 championship sports.

 

 

JORDAN OGLE SIGNS WITH KENTUCKY WESLEYAN

Set school record with 77 three-pointers made

 

OWENSBORO, Ky. (Dec. 9, 2008) — Jordan Ogle, a 6-foot guard/forward from Columbus East High School in Columbus, Ind., has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue her education and basketball career at Kentucky Wesleyan College, according to Panther head coach Ron Williams.

        As a junior captain, Ogle led the Olympians in scoring with 16.3 points per game and set a season three-point record with 77 made and led the state in free throw shooting at 90.1 percent for head coach Danny Brown.

        “Jordan is a great perimeter shooter with size,” said Williams. “She has also proven through her high school seasons and summer competition that she is a winner. We are honored that she has chosen KWC to play her college basketball.”

        She also averaged 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game while shooting a team-best 38.4 percent from three-point territory in 2008 while helping Columbus East to the sectional and regional titles.  Ogle also broke the school’s single game record for points with 35 as a junior.

        Her postseason honors include selection to the All-Hoosier Hills Conference squad, Republic All-Area first-team, and named Player of the Week four times. Entering her senior season, Ogle has amassed over 700 points.

        Ogle as a sophomore was the second leading scorer with 13.4 points per contest and once again led the state in free throw shooting with 91.1 percent. She also recorded the Olympians best three-point percentage at 35.3.

        She earned All-Area first team recognition and honorable mention all-conference in 2007 while helping Columbus East to conference, sectional, regional and semi-state championships and finishing as state 4-A runner-up.

        Her AAU team, Eastern Indiana Wolfpack, won two Indiana state titles and finished fifth and seventh in the nationals during her two-year tenure with head coach Jerry Shuck.

        Ogle joins Demi Wendt from Daviess County High School as early-period signees for KWC.

FOOTBALL GARNERS ALL-GREAT LAKES FOOTBALL CONFERENCE AWARDS
19 student-athletes recognized

 

TIFFIN, Ohio. (Nov. 18, 2008) — Nineteen Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers earn All-Great Lakes Football

Conference honors  as voted on by league coaches including Freshman of the Year Je’Sean Godfrey.

Godfrey, a running back from Cincinnati, Ohio (Harmony HS), also received first-team honors in leading the Panthers in rushing with 469 yards on 98 carries and two touchdowns.

Also chosen for the first team were Josh Smith and Brandon Hodnett.

Smith, a senior wide receiver from Jersey City, NJ (O’Fallon HS) led the league in receptions (68) and receiving yards (926) while scoring eight touchdowns. Hodnett, a senior kicker from Clinton, Md. (Gwynn Park HS), made 24-of-25 PATs and four field goals for a second-best 36 points.

Selected for the second team were Greg Embers, Perry Freeze, Robert Glover, Sean Maguire, Brian Oberley, Chuck Palonis, Chad Smith, Steven Smith, Ben Wilson and Amore’ Winters.

Embers, a senior defensive back from Louisville (Seneca HS), led KWC with 63 tackles. Freeze, a senior offensive lineman from Bowling Green (Greenwood) started all 10 games. Glover, a junior defensive back from Sardis, Miss. (North Panola HS), led the Panthers in interceptions with four and had 52 tackles.

Maguire, a sophomore punter from Louisville (DeSales HS), led the league in punting with a 39.5 average. Oberley, a senior from Southport, Fla. (Mosley HS), collected 41 tackles including 31 solos. Palonis, a sophomore offensive lineman from Chicago (Mount Carmel HS) started all 10 games.

Chad Smith, a junior linebacker from Louisville (Southern HS), finished second in tackles with 57. Steven Smith, senior defensive lineman from Indianapolis (Lawrence North HS), led KWC in tackles for loss with 10 and grabbed 49 tackles.

Wilson, a junior defensive lineman from Columbus, Ind. (Columbus East HS), led the Panthers with three sacks and had 28 tackles. Winters, a junior return specialist from Kosciusko, Miss. (Kosciusko HS), led KWC with kick return yardage with 312 on 13 returns including a school-record 95-yard touchdown.

Four Panthers were also named to the GLFC All-Academic team. They are Richard Fangman, a junior from Louisville (Male HS); Chris Owen, a sophomore quarterback from Evansville, Ind. (Central HS); Ben Wilson; and Anthony Woodruff, a junior from Lexington (Bryan Station HS).

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4.

 

MARLON PARMER SELECTED BY THE COLORADO 14ERS IN NBADL DRAFT
2003 Division II Player of the Year selected in third round (No. 34th overall)

 

ATLANTA, Ga. (Nov. 11, 2008) — Former Kentucky Wesleyan guard Marlon Parmer, the 2003 NCAA Division II Player of the Year, was selected by the Colorado 14ers with the second pick in the third round (No. 34 overall) of the 2008 NBA Development League Draft in Atlanta last Friday.

        Parmer, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound consensus All-American from Inglewood, Calif., led the 2003 Panthers with 19.9 points, 8.2 assists (second in the nation), 1.3 steals and 35.2 minutes.

        He shot 46.8 percent from the field, 36.6 percent from three-point, and 79.1 percent from the free throw line, and was third in rebounding at 5.6 per game.

        Parmer scored in double figures 33 of 35 games, recorded eight double-doubles (points-assists) and produced back-to-back triple-doubles as a senior.

        He is the second Panther in KWC history to be selected in the NBADL Draft. Albert Richardson, a 6-9 center was drafted in the seventh round by the Huntsville Flight in 2001.

        Parmer has played professionally in the Continental Basketball Association (Sioux Falls Skyforce, Yakima Sun Kings and Rockford Lighting), NBA Summer Leagues and Mini Camps (Bulls, Warriors, Heat and Timberwolves) and overseas in France, Israel. Poland, Estonia, Venezuela and Qatar.

        The 14ers finished the 2007-08 season with a 29-21 record, finishing second in the Southwest Division. The 14ers were defeated by the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the first round of the NBADL Playoffs.
