Part of Southtown Blvd in Owensboro to Close Starting Monday
A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close a short section of the westbound lane of KY 2121/Southtown Boulevard in Owensboro starting Monday, February 25, 2013.
This closure on KY 2121/Southtown Boulevard is for WESTBOUND traffic only. The westbound closure starts at US 431/Frederica Street and continues to the Gulf Station at KY 2121 mile point 1.608.
More specifically, traffic will be permitted to access Southtown Blvd from the entrance just West of the Gulf Gas Station. This entrance, which serves as an access point to Towne Square North shopping center, will remain open. Eastbound traffic on Southtown Blvd will not be affected by this closure. There will be no marked detour as there are numerous routes/access points to bypass the closure.
This closure of westbound lanes on Southtown Boulevard is required due to an excavation along the existing roadway. This excavation creates a safety issue for both construction workers and passing motorists at this site. Closing the westbound lane is expected to speed the work and improve safety for all.
Again, the westbound closure on KY 2121/ Southtown Boulevard will start at US 431/Frederica Street and extend to the entrance just West of the Gulf Gas Station. That entrance will remain open to traffic.
This westbound closure is expected to be in place from February 25th through approximately April 15th. Eastbound traffic will not be affected by the closure. The exact date for reopening of the westbound lane will be weather dependent.
As an update on remaining work on this extended project, reconstruction along Southtown Boulevard is significantly complete from KY 2698/Carter Road to KY 2699/Goetz Drive. From KY 3699/Goetz Drive to US 431/Frederica Street, the contractor is proceeding with phased construction activities. The contractor expects to complete the outside lanes of construction and move traffic to the newly constructed lanes by late-spring or early summer. At that time, construction will begin on the inside/existing lanes. The contractor expects to have that work completed, along with the final driving surface, by the middle of summer when the project should be nearing completion.
The official completion date for this project is October 16, 2013. However, the contractor is on track to have the project completed by mid-summer if weather allows.
