Signal at SR 66, Orchard Road in Spencer County to Activate Soon

SPENCER COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is announcing the recently installed traffic signal on State Road 66 (S.R. 66) at Orchard Road in southern Spencer County will be functioning next week.
On Monday, September 26, between 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. local time the signals will be activated.  INDOT traffic crews installed the signal heads and pavement markings this week.  Pavement sensors will activate the signals as necessary.
The new temporary signals are short-term solution which allows left turning movements from eastbound S.R. 66 onto north Orchard Road.  No new pavement was added but additional pavement markings were installed to clarify the lanes.  Dedicated right turn only movements from S.R. 66 onto Orchard Road were also marked.
INDOT’s long-term solution for the intersection includes the installation of a roundabout.  Roundabouts have proven to be safe and effective in moving traffic through sometimes heavy volume intersections.  Design of the new intersection will begin soon with construction to begin in a future year.
INDOT encourages motorists to slow down and pay special attention as motorists become familiar with the new signal and traffic movements in the area.  For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit and
